President Donald Trump falsely claimed Sunday that the “Biden FBI” planted 274 agents among rioters on January 6, 2021—a statement contradicted by official reports and basic timelines. Trump, who was president during the Capitol attack, made the assertion on his Truth Social account, writing: “THE BIDEN FBI PLACED 274 AGENTS INTO THE CROWD ON JANUARY 6.”

In reality, Joe Biden did not take office until January 20, 2021, and the FBI was under Trump’s authority at the time, led by his own appointee, Director Christopher Wray. Both Wray and current FBI Director Kash Patel have said agents were sent in after the riot began to assist with crowd control, not to infiltrate or provoke violence.

Independent fact checks from PolitiFact and Lead Stories confirm that no evidence exists of undercover or embedded agents. The 2024 Justice Department Inspector General’s report similarly found no indication that FBI agents participated in or incited the attack.

Experts note Trump’s claim revives “fedsurrection” conspiracy theories long debunked by investigators and courts.
