President Donald Trump endorsed the Department of Government Efficiency’s (DOGE) probe into alleged fraud and waste at the IRS, a department he has long criticized for supposedly targeting conservatives. Trump has proposed replacing the IRS with an “External Revenue Office,” claiming new tariffs would offset the loss of federal income taxes.
DOGE officials, led by Elon Musk, reportedly arrived at IRS headquarters Thursday before Trump’s Oval Office signing ceremony for his reciprocal tariff agenda. Trump praised the investigation, calling DOGE a “force of super-geniuses” and stating that no government agency would be exempt from scrutiny.
Sen. Ron Wyden (D-OR) warned that DOGE’s IRS audit could grant access to sensitive taxpayer data and might delay 2024 tax refunds. Meanwhile, Musk suggested DOGE had found anomalies in Social Security records, including beneficiaries over 150 years old. The White House and DOGE have not responded to inquiries regarding the audits.
