President Trump signed the Laken Riley Act into law, securing his first legislative win since returning to office. The bill, passed by the House in a 263-156 vote and the Senate in a 64-35 vote, mandates the detention of migrants without legal status if accused of crimes like theft or burglary.
At the signing, Trump called the law a bipartisan effort to protect American lives, referencing Laken Riley, a Georgia nursing student killed by a Venezuelan migrant. Riley’s family attended the event, with her mother praising Trump’s commitment.
The law allows state governments to sue the federal government over immigration enforcement. Trump also announced an executive order to prepare Guantánamo Bay for detaining criminal migrants. Critics raised concerns over detaining individuals before conviction.
Trump’s administration has also paused refugee admissions, reinstated law enforcement partnerships, and declared migration a national security threat.
