Former President Donald Trump has indicated support for compensating individuals he pardoned for their roles in the Jan. 6, 2021, Capitol attack. In a Newsmax interview, host Greg Kelly asked if there was discussion about a compensation fund for those who “lost opportunity” and “income.”

“Well, there’s talk about that,” Trump responded, adding, “They were patriots as far as I was concerned.”

Earlier this year, Trump issued a blanket pardon to roughly 1,500 individuals linked to the Capitol riot, including some convicted of violence. The move fulfilled a campaign promise but drew widespread criticism. Senate Democrats passed a resolution condemning the mass pardons.

“They were treated so unfairly, so horribly,” Trump told Newsmax, noting some defendants never entered the building.

Following the pardons, polls showed many Americans opposed clemency for violent rioters. Approximately 600 defendants were accused of assaulting or impeding police, and 10 were convicted of sedition.

Trump also attacked President Biden’s pardons, declaring them invalid due to their use of an autopen.
