President Donald Trump suggested Friday that his administration could lower the 145% tariff on Chinese goods to 80%, ahead of planned U.S.-China trade talks in Geneva this weekend.

“80% Tariff on China seems right! Up to Scott B.,” Trump posted on Truth Social, referencing Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent. In a follow-up post, he urged Beijing to “open up its market”, declaring, “CLOSED MARKETS DON’T WORK ANYMORE!!!”

The Geneva meeting marks the first face-to-face discussion between top U.S. and Chinese trade officials since the sharp tariff escalation. Bessent and U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer have signaled that the primary goal is to de-escalate tensions, not finalize a sweeping trade deal.

“My sense is that this will be about de-escalation,” Bessent said Tuesday on Fox News.

Since the tariffs took effect, Chinese shipments to the U.S. have dropped significantly, raising concerns among retailers about supply disruptions and rising prices. Trump, however, framed the trade impact positively, saying Thursday, “We were losing a trillion dollars a year, now we’re not losing anything.”

Bessent added that “America First does not mean America alone,” calling for renewed international cooperation on trade while maintaining a tough stance on China.
