The Trump administration has sent 300 federalized California National Guard troops to Portland, Oregon, a move that Gov. Gavin Newsom (D) condemned as “a breathtaking abuse of the law and power.” The White House confirmed the deployment Sunday, saying it was intended to “protect federal assets and personnel in Portland following violent riots.”

The decision comes one day after a federal judge temporarily blocked Trump’s attempt to deploy Oregon National Guard troops, ruling the administration had not shown that local law enforcement couldn’t manage immigration-related protests.

Oregon Gov. Tina Kotek said her office was aware of Guard members already arriving in the state and criticized the move as unnecessary. Portland Mayor Keith Wilson warned the action “circumvents the court’s decision and threatens to inflame a peaceful community.”

Trump dismissed the ruling, saying Judge Karin Immergut “ought to be ashamed.”
