Former President Donald Trump is attempting to move his hush-money case to federal court, aiming to overturn his conviction and delay sentencing. Trump’s attorneys filed a request with the US District Court in Manhattan, arguing that the Manhattan State Court violated his constitutional rights during the trial.
Trump’s lawyers referenced a recent Supreme Court ruling on presidential immunity, suggesting the case might reach the Supreme Court if taken up by federal court. They expressed concerns that the ongoing legal proceedings could damage Trump’s 2024 presidential campaign.
In May, Trump was found guilty of 34 felony counts related to falsifying business records to conceal a hush-money payment to Stormy Daniels before the 2016 election. His sentencing is scheduled for September 18, 2024, but the federal court request, if granted, could delay this.
