A federal judge has accepted Donald Trump’s $91.63 million bond in the defamation case brought by E. Jean Carroll, pausing any collection efforts against the former president while he appeals the January verdict. Trump has a five-day window to file the bond with the Southern District of New York court clerk, effectively freezing enforcement of the jury’s $83 million judgment until the Second Circuit Court of Appeals concludes its review.

Trump’s legal team announced their intention to appeal earlier this month and recently confirmed the acquisition of the necessary bond, moving away from prior requests for a reduced bond amount and extended procurement time. Carroll, reacting to the bond news on Substack, described the amount as “stupendous.”

The bond was provided by Federal Insurance Co. This development comes after a jury ordered Trump in January to compensate Carroll with $83.3 million for defamation, marking the second legal victory for Carroll against Trump. The former president faced liability for sexual abuse and defamation in a previous case, resulting in a $5 million damages award to Carroll. The appeal of this latest defamation judgment unfolds as Trump also seeks to overturn a separate $464 million judgment in a New York civil fraud case.
