President Donald Trump on Thursday called for Rep. Ilhan Omar (D-MN) to be impeached from Congress after a failed censure resolution against her related to remarks about Charlie Kirk. Speaking aboard Air Force One, Trump said, “I think she should be impeached. I think she’s terrible,” later adding, “She should be impeached, and it should happen fast.”
Trump also disparaged Omar in subsequent remarks, referring to her as “scum” and reviving a long-debunked claim that she married her brother to obtain citizenship. Fact-checkers have found no conclusive evidence supporting that allegation.
The impeachment demand came after Rep. Nancy Mace (R-SC) introduced a resolution to censure Omar, which failed when several Republicans opposed it in exchange for dropping a separate censure resolution against Rep. Cory Mills (R-FL).
Following his comments, Trump posted on Truth Social, criticizing Somalia as “corrupt” and questioning Omar’s legitimacy. The Constitution does not provide for impeachment of members of Congress, though the House can move to expel members with a two-thirds vote. Republicans currently lack the numbers for expulsion, and Democrats are unlikely to support such a measure.
