President Trump said Saturday that Ukraine should “make a deal” to end the war, noting that “Russia is a very big power, and they’re not.” His comments came after a summit in Alaska where Russian President Vladimir Putin reportedly demanded Ukraine cede all of Donetsk in exchange for freezing most front lines.

A source familiar with Trump’s follow-up briefing with Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said Kyiv flatly rejected the demand. Russia already controls about 75% of Donetsk and a fifth of Ukraine overall.

Trump told Fox News he and Putin “largely agreed” on land transfers and security guarantees, adding, “Ukraine has to agree to it. Maybe they’ll say no.” Zelensky insisted any peace must include security guarantees to prevent future invasions.

European leaders welcomed Trump’s involvement but vowed to tighten sanctions on Russia. Critics, however, said Putin gained stature without concessions, calling the meeting “1-0 for Putin.”

Putin ended the summit by telling Trump, “Next time in Moscow.” Trump chuckled, saying he might “get a little heat” but did not rule it out.
