President Donald Trump defended new tariffs on Canada (25%), Mexico (25%), and China (10%), acknowledging potential economic strain but arguing they are necessary due to “major” trade deficits. He criticized opponents, including The Wall Street Journal, accusing them of enabling foreign “ripoffs.”

“If companies made their products in the U.S., there would be no tariffs,” Trump stated on Truth Social, calling this “the Golden Age of America.” He suggested Canada should become “our Cherished 51st State,” a remark quickly dismissed by Canadian officials.

Canada vowed 25% tariffs on $100 billion in U.S. goods, while Mexico and China pledged retaliatory measures, with China planning a WTO complaint. Experts warn of consumer price increases, with the Tax Foundation estimating an $830 per household impact. Sen. Susan Collins (R-Maine) warned of harm to industries reliant on Canadian imports.
