Donald Trump announced Thursday that Memphis will be the next city targeted under his administration’s federal crime crackdown, following recent interventions in Washington, D.C.

“We’re going to Memphis. That’s the next city. Memphis is deeply troubled, and the mayor is happy. He’s a Democrat mayor,” Trump said during an interview on Fox & Friends. He added that if needed, “we’ll bring in the military too.”

Memphis Mayor Paul Young (D) confirmed earlier this week that Trump and Tennessee Gov. Bill Lee (R) had discussed deploying the National Guard. Trump has also threatened to send federal law enforcement to other Democrat-led cities, including Chicago, New Orleans, and Los Angeles.

Since assuming direct federal control over Washington last month, Trump has portrayed violent crime in major cities as evidence of failed Democratic leadership. His suggestion of sending troops to Chicago previously drew sharp criticism from Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker (D).

The White House argues that the crackdown is necessary to restore order in cities struggling with violent crime, though critics contend the moves amount to federal overreach into local governance.
