President Donald Trump said Saturday he will sign an executive order requiring voter ID for “every single vote,” while again calling for the elimination of voting machines and mail-in voting, except for military personnel and the seriously ill.
“Voter I.D. Must Be Part of Every Single Vote. NO EXCEPTIONS! I Will Be Doing An Executive Order To That End!!!” Trump posted on Truth Social. He also repeated his demand for paper ballots only.
It remains unclear when the order will be issued, but Trump has previously argued that states act as “agents” of the federal government in elections, suggesting he has authority to dictate voting rules nationwide.
Currently, 36 states require some form of voter ID, with 25 mandating photo identification and 11 accepting non-photo documents. Fourteen states and Washington, D.C., do not require any ID before voting.
