President Donald Trump said Monday he “would love” to run against former President Barack Obama in a hypothetical third-term election matchup.
While signing executive orders, Trump was asked whether Democrats could attempt to run Obama if he himself sought a third term. “I would love that,” Trump replied. “Boy, I’d love that. That would be a good one.”
Trump acknowledged he hasn’t explored the possibility of a third run, but added, “They do say there’s a way you can do it, but I don’t know about that.”
The U.S. Constitution, via the 22nd Amendment ratified in 1951, bars presidents from being elected more than twice. Trump has floated the idea of running beyond a second term, telling NBC News on Sunday he wasn’t joking and alluding to “methods” that could allow it.
Despite recent viral moments of Trump and Obama appearing friendly at former President Jimmy Carter’s funeral, a third-term faceoff between the two remains constitutionally improbable.
