President Trump said he would “absolutely” sign legislation banning members of Congress from trading stocks, according to an interview published Friday by Time Magazine. “If they send that to me, I would do it,” he said, citing former Speaker Nancy Pelosi‘s investments as an example of insider advantage.
Pelosi dropped her opposition to stock trading legislation in 2022 following scrutiny over her husband’s financial gains from market activity. While Democrats have long pushed for reforms, recent criticism has also focused on Republican lawmakers. Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-Ga.), a close Trump ally, made stock purchases just before Trump announced a 90-day tariff pause that boosted markets. Greene said trades were made by her financial adviser.
Despite bipartisan support, Congress has yet to pass a stock trading ban. The ETHICS Act, which would have barred lawmakers and their families from trading, failed to advance last year before the Senate flipped to Republican control.
