President Donald Trump said Friday that he “hasn’t thought about” pardoning Ghislaine Maxwell but added, “I’m allowed to do it.” Maxwell is serving a 20-year prison sentence for sex trafficking.
Asked again later, Trump said, “I don’t want to talk about that,” but praised Deputy Attorney General Todd Blanche, who met with Maxwell this week in Tallahassee. Trump also stated he “never went to his [Epstein’s] island.”
So far in his second term, Trump has granted 58 pardons and 12 commutations, including blanket clemency for those convicted or awaiting trial for their involvement in the Jan. 6 Capitol riot.
Maxwell’s attorney David Oscar Markus said she “answered every single question” and has “no reason to lie.” Blanche promised transparency and is expected to continue the interview process.
Meanwhile, the House Oversight Committee has subpoenaed Maxwell for an August 11 deposition and is also demanding the DOJ release Epstein-related files. House Republican leaders recessed early for the summer, which Democrats claim was to avoid a vote on the issue.
The DOJ has said it has no Epstein client list, despite Attorney General Pam Bondi’s February claim that it was “on her desk.”
As scrutiny mounts, Trump has focused on other topics, including accusing former President Barack Obama of “treason” over intelligence related to Russia’s 2016 election interference — a charge Obama’s office called “bizarre” and “ridiculous.”
