President Donald Trump said Sunday that new tariffs on semiconductor chips will be announced “over the next week,” while hinting that some companies may receive flexibility under the policy.

Speaking aboard Air Force One, Trump said the White House is considering options for products like iPhones and tablets, noting, “Nobody should be so rigid.” However, he declined to specify which products could be exempt.

The comments follow Friday’s release of a memorandum listing semiconductors among “excepted products” under Executive Order 14257, which imposed 125% import tariffs on Chinese goods. Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick later clarified that exemptions for smartphones and electronics were temporary.

Trump also denied in a Truth Social post that exceptions had already been granted and said the administration was conducting “National Security Tariff Investigations” into the full electronics supply chain.

While initial news of exemptions buoyed tech stocks, Trump’s remarks suggest a shift that could again disrupt the market and supply chains.
