President Donald Trump has revoked U.S. Secret Service protection for former Vice President Kamala Harris, a senior adviser to Harris confirmed Friday.
“The Vice President is grateful to the United States Secret Service for their professionalism, dedication, and unwavering commitment to safety,” the adviser said in a statement to NBC News.
A White House official said Trump’s decision reflects standard practice, as former vice presidents typically receive only six months of protection after leaving office, under a 2008 law. However, President Joe Biden had signed an executive memorandum in January extending Harris’ protection to 18 months.
The Secret Service confirmed the revocation, first reported by CNN. It follows Trump’s earlier decision to terminate protection for Biden’s adult children, Hunter and Ashley. Federal law still requires lifetime protection for former presidents and their spouses, and protection for their children until age 16.
Harris, who served as vice president from 2021 to 2025, is among the most prominent Democrats still receiving protection beyond the six-month window before Trump reversed the extension.
