The Trump administration has reinstated the detention of migrant families with children, marking a significant shift in immigration policy as part of the president’s effort to carry out the largest deportation operation in U.S. history.
Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) on Thursday began holding migrant parents and children at the Karnes detention facility in Texas, according to an internal government report obtained by CBS News. The report confirmed that the first group includes three children.
Department of Homeland Security (DHS) spokeswoman Tricia McLaughlin stated that the detained families have deportation orders, and two Texas immigration detention centers are being refitted to house families.
This move reverses a policy change by the Biden administration, which had ended long-term family detention. Critics argue that detaining children harms their psychological well-being, with child welfare advocates calling the practice “inhumane.”
The expansion of ICE’s detention capacity is straining resources, with detention facilities at 120% capacity. Despite this, the administration remains focused on stepping up arrests and deportations across the U.S.
