President-elect Donald Trump renewed his proposal for the U.S. to purchase Greenland as he announced Ken Howery, co-founder of PayPal, as his pick for ambassador to Denmark. Trump first floated the idea during his previous administration but faced rejection from Danish officials, leading him to cancel a planned state visit.
In a Truth Social post, Trump framed Greenland’s ownership as vital for “National Security and Freedom throughout the World” and expressed confidence in Howery’s ability to represent U.S. interests.
Greenland, which operates under self-rule, remains part of the Kingdom of Denmark. Trump’s remarks follow his recent criticism of Panama’s canal tariffs and calls for its control to return to the U.S.
Trump’s team has not provided further details on plans regarding Greenland.
