During a presidential debate with Kamala Harris, Donald Trump reignited the debate over the Affordable Care Act (ACA), criticizing the law as “lousy” and suggesting it could be replaced with a better, more affordable system. However, Trump admitted that he only had “concepts of a plan” and did not provide specifics on what such a replacement would look like.
Trump’s comments marked a renewed focus on the ACA, which Republicans have attempted to repeal since its enactment in 2010. Despite early unpopularity, the law has grown into a political asset for Democrats, especially after the GOP’s failed 2017 repeal attempt, which fell one vote short in the Senate.
Harris, who was a senator during that vote, accused Trump of having “no plan” and praised the ACA for protecting people with pre-existing conditions. The Biden administration announced record ACA enrollment this year, with 20.8 million Americans signing up.
Trump’s revived push to repeal the ACA has drawn mixed responses from Republicans. While some acknowledge the law’s flaws, many are reluctant to revisit the issue, as its benefits have become entrenched in the U.S. healthcare system.
