President Donald Trump reportedly vetoed an Israeli plan to assassinate Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, according to two unnamed U.S. officials speaking to Reuters. The decision followed a major Israeli strike on Iran aimed at curbing its nuclear ambitions.

A senior U.S. official cited by Reuters said Trump dismissed the plan, stating, “Until [Iran kills] an American, we’re not even talking about going after the political leadership.” While the officials declined to say if Trump personally conveyed the message, they confirmed close coordination between Washington and Tel Aviv. Trump has maintained regular contact with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

When asked about the report during an interview with Fox News, Netanyahu denied the specific account but added, “We’ll do what we need to do.” Trump has expressed interest in renewing talks with Iran, but a scheduled round of negotiations in Oman was canceled due to the Israeli strikes.

On Friday, Trump told Reuters, “We knew everything” about the Israeli military actions.
