President Donald Trump announced Saturday that he will nominate Lindsey Halligan, a longtime Trump attorney and White House aide, to serve as U.S. attorney for the Eastern District of Virginia. The decision follows the abrupt resignation of Erik Siebert, who left the post Friday after refusing to pursue charges against New York Attorney General Letitia James in a mortgage fraud probe.
In a Truth Social post, Trump called Halligan “Fair, Smart, and…desperately needed” to deliver “JUSTICE FOR ALL.” Halligan previously represented Trump in the classified documents case and was present at Mar-a-Lago during the FBI raid. More recently, she has overseen White House efforts to review Smithsonian exhibits for “improper ideology.”
Siebert’s departure came amid Trump’s insistence that James be prosecuted over alleged misrepresentations tied to property loans. Siebert reportedly told Justice Department officials that investigators lacked sufficient evidence, prompting Trump to fire him. James has denied wrongdoing, and her lawyer Abbe Lowell described Siebert’s removal as “a brazen attack on the rule of law.”
Earlier Saturday, Attorney General Pam Bondi elevated Mary “Maggie” Cleary as acting U.S. attorney, but Trump quickly moved to install Halligan instead. Confirmation by the Senate would be required.
