Donald Trump reiterated his unproven claim Tuesday that government jobs data is being manipulated, days after he fired the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) commissioner over a weak jobs report. In an interview with CNBC, Trump alleged, “The numbers were rigged … Biden wasn’t doing well, he was doing poorly,” though he provided no evidence.
The firing followed a July jobs report that showed just 73,000 jobs added and included historic downward revisions. Trump accused the now-former commissioner of distorting data to benefit Joe Biden before the 2024 election.
His administration has launched a campaign to discredit the BLS, calling its data “very unreliable.” The move has drawn bipartisan backlash, with economists and lawmakers warning of risks to investor confidence.
In a related development, Federal Reserve Governor Adriana Kugler resigned unexpectedly, giving Trump an opportunity to appoint a loyalist who could become a future Fed chair.
Despite criticism, Trump indicated he will announce replacements for both the BLS and Federal Reserve posts later this week, deepening concerns about politicization of independent economic institutions.
