During a stop in Michigan, former President Donald Trump falsely claimed that Chinese automakers are building large factories in Mexico and vowed to impose 200% tariffs on any vehicles they produce and ship to the U.S. Trump also warned that if Vice President Kamala Harris is elected, the U.S. auto industry will vanish, with electric vehicle jobs shifting to China.

Despite Trump’s assertions, auto industry employment has grown under President Biden, with auto and parts jobs increasing by 13.6% since January 2021. Auto sales are also up 2.4% this year. Industry analysts say no large Chinese-owned factories are under construction in Mexico, contradicting Trump’s claims.

Trump’s proposed tariffs on foreign-made vehicles aim to force automakers to build plants in the U.S., but tariffs often increase costs for consumers. The Harris campaign responded, with Michigan Sen. Gary Peters stating that another Trump term would harm auto jobs and boost China’s dominance.
