President Donald Trump abruptly fired Carla Hayden, the nation’s first Black and first female Librarian of Congress, on Thursday—more than a year before her 10-year term was set to end. The dismissal, sent via email from the White House’s Presidential Personnel Office, is the latest in a series of actions removing officials viewed as unsupportive of Trump’s agenda.
Hayden, confirmed by the Senate in 2016, was informed that her position was “terminated effective immediately.” A Library of Congress spokesperson confirmed her removal, and The Associated Press obtained the termination notice.
Hayden had faced mounting pressure from conservative activists, particularly the American Accountability Foundation, which accused her of promoting “radical” and “anti-Trump” material in library collections. Earlier Thursday, the group posted on X that she was “woke” and pushed “trans-ing kids,” calling for her ouster.
Democrats blasted the firing. Rep. Rosa DeLauro (D-CT) called the move “callous,” and House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries called it “a disgrace,” framing it as part of Trump’s broader effort to ban books and rewrite U.S. history.
The dismissal even drew humor from Secretary of State Marco Rubio, who joked during a Wednesday gala that Rep. Mario Diaz-Balart (R-FL) should be named acting librarian.
Hayden’s replacement has not yet been announced. Her firing comes amid Trump’s continued efforts to reshape federal institutions heading into the second year of his administration.
