Former President Donald Trump announced plans Thursday to establish a “government efficiency commission” if elected in November. Speaking at the Economic Club of New York, Trump said the commission would conduct a full audit of the federal government and propose “drastic reforms.”
Elon Musk, CEO of Tesla and SpaceX, has agreed to lead the effort “if he has the time,” according to Trump. Musk expressed his willingness in a social media post, stating, “I look forward to serving America if the opportunity arises.”
Musk initially suggested the idea during a conversation with Trump last month, proposing the commission focus on national debt and government spending. However, the scope of potential budget cuts remains unclear.
Critics, including former Biden official Bharat Ramamurti, argue the proposal could lead to cuts in programs like Social Security and Medicare while benefiting the wealthy. A Penn Wharton Budget Model estimated Trump’s previous economic proposals could increase deficits by over $4 trillion in the next decade.
