President Trump on Thursday proposed turning the war-torn Gaza Strip into a “freedom zone,” reaffirming support for a controversial plan to permanently displace Palestinians, even as Israel intensifies its offensive and ceasefire negotiations falter.
Speaking in Qatar during the final leg of his Middle East tour, Trump said Gaza “has been a territory of death and destruction for many years,” and floated U.S. involvement in redeveloping the enclave. The remarks came as Israel’s airstrikes killed over 150 people in 24 hours, with Gaza’s health ministry reporting a total death toll surpassing 53,000 — including tens of thousands of children.
Israel’s government has embraced Trump’s vision, which Arab nations and Hamas reject as “ethnic cleansing.”
Ceasefire talks remain stalled despite Trump envoy Steve Witkoff visiting Israel and Hamas releasing one hostage after direct U.S. talks. Meanwhile, Israel is preparing a new offensive and a U.S.-backed food distribution plan tied to forced displacement — opposed by aid agencies and the U.N.
Trump’s visit has largely focused on defense deals and business investments, including a massive Boeing order from Qatar.
