Washington, DC — President Donald Trump has unveiled plans for a towering 250-foot “Independence Arch” to mark the United States’ 250th anniversary, a proposal that has quickly sparked criticism from architects and preservation experts who warn it could dramatically alter the capital’s historic landscape.

According to details reported by The Washington Post, Trump’s preferred design would rise across the Potomac River near Memorial Circle, placing it in proximity to the Lincoln Memorial and Arlington National Cemetery. The proposed height would surpass the Lincoln Memorial and approach the scale of the U.S. Capitol, prompting concerns that it would overwhelm existing monuments and obstruct key sightlines.

Architect Catesby Leigh, who has been involved in earlier design discussions, said the scale of the arch would visually diminish nearby landmarks, remarking that it could make Arlington House appear “like a dollhouse.” Calder Loth, a former senior architectural historian for the Commonwealth of Virginia, echoed those concerns, arguing that the monument’s size would undermine the intent and symbolism of surrounding memorials rather than complement them.

Trump reportedly selected the tallest of three design options after previously considering smaller versions measuring 165 feet and 123 feet. Renderings released earlier this month depict the Independence Arch adorned with statues and gold accents, signaling a dramatic addition to Washington’s skyline.

Beyond aesthetic concerns, critics also warn the project would significantly disrupt traffic around Memorial Circle, an area already known for congestion. Any construction at the site would likely require major infrastructure changes and face regulatory and public opposition.
