President Donald Trump said his administration is considering distributing checks of up to $2,000 to Americans, calling it a “dividend program” funded by tariff revenue.
Speaking to One America News Network, Trump said tariff revenue has generated nearly $215 billion this year and suggested it could be shared directly with households. “We also might make a distribution to the people, almost like a dividend to the people of America … maybe a 1,000 to 2,000 dollars,” he said. Trump emphasized, however, that his priority is reducing the $37 trillion national debt before moving to direct payments.
Tariffs have driven record revenue but also increased consumer costs. Businesses paying higher import taxes typically pass costs to customers, with the Yale Budget Lab estimating that tariffs will add about $2,300 to the average household’s expenses in 2025 for essentials such as groceries, electronics, and toys.
Rep. Ro Khanna (D-Calif.) has also called for refund checks, saying the funds should “give it back to working families so they can pay the bills.” Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent previously cautioned such payments were unlikely soon, citing the need to first reduce debt-to-GDP levels.
The Supreme Court will hear arguments in November on whether Trump exceeded presidential authority in raising tariffs.
