President Donald Trump indicated that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky may visit the White House soon to finalize a rare earth minerals agreement with the U.S. as part of efforts to end the Russia-Ukraine war.
“We are very close to a final deal,” Trump stated Monday, adding that the agreement could be signed this week or next. Under the proposed deal, Ukraine would contribute 50% of its revenue from minerals, oil, gas, and ports to a U.S.-co-managed investment fund in exchange for long-term financial support.
Trump noted that Russian President Vladimir Putin is now open to peacekeepers in Ukraine, a proposal he had previously rejected. However, U.S. security guarantees are not part of the agreement.
The announcement came as Trump met with French President Emmanuel Macron at the White House, where they joined a virtual G7 meeting. Trump reiterated that the war would not have started under his administration and emphasized economic partnerships with Ukraine and Russia.
