Donald Trump said Tuesday he is prepared to mobilize federal authorities in Chicago and Baltimore, promising to address crime despite opposition from local leaders. “We’re going in,” Trump told reporters, though he did not specify when. “I have an obligation. This isn’t a political thing.”

Illinois Gov. JB Pritzker and Chicago Mayor Brandon Johnson rejected federal intervention, while Maryland Gov. Wes Moore and Baltimore Mayor Brandon Scott voiced similar opposition. Pritzker called Trump’s comments “unhinged” and urged residents to document federal interactions, warning, “Authoritarians thrive on your silence.”

Trump has already deployed the National Guard in Los Angeles and Washington, D.C., though a federal judge ruled the California deployment unlawful. He praised D.C. Mayor Muriel Bowser for cooperating, contrasting her with Democratic officials in Illinois and Maryland.

Chicago has seen homicides fall more than 30% in the first half of 2025, though it recorded 573 in 2024, the highest total of any U.S. city. Baltimore, meanwhile, marked historic lows in August homicides. Both cities maintain that federal troops are unnecessary. Illinois officials have pledged lawsuits if the deployments proceed.
