Former President Donald Trump on Wednesday praised Supreme Court Justice Samuel Alito for refusing to recuse himself from upcoming cases related to the 2020 election and the January 6, 2021 events. This came after reports that “Stop The Steal” flags were flown outside Alito’s homes.
“Congratulations to United States Supreme Court Justice Samuel Alito for showing the INTELLIGENCE, COURAGE, and ‘GUTS’ to refuse stepping aside from making a decision on anything January 6th related,” Trump posted on Truth Social.
He added, “All U.S. Judges, Justices, and Leaders should have such GRIT – Our Country would be far more advanced than its current status as A BADLY FAILING NATION, headed by the Worst President in American History, Crooked Joe Biden!”
Alito, nominated by former President George W. Bush, addressed the flags in letters to Congress, clarifying that he had no involvement with the “Stop The Steal” flags, including an upside-down American flag flown by his wife as part of a neighborhood dispute. The upside-down flag is traditionally a signal of distress but has been associated with protests over Trump’s 2020 election loss.
The Supreme Court’s ethics code discourages justices from making political statements to maintain impartiality.
The Court is set to rule on key cases related to the January 6 attack, including whether Trump has immunity from prosecution. Trump argues that a president has absolute immunity for official acts while in office, extending beyond his term. This claim relates to criminal charges against him in Washington regarding his efforts to prevent the transfer of power after the 2020 election.
If the Supreme Court sides with Trump, many of his criminal indictments could be dismissed. Even a partial agreement could delay legal actions against him beyond the upcoming presidential election.
