President-elect Donald Trump described Sen. John Fetterman (D-Pa.) as a “commonsense person” following their meeting at Mar-a-Lago, which he called “fascinating.” Trump told the Washington Examiner that Fetterman is neither liberal nor conservative but embodies practical thinking.
Fetterman, the first Senate Democrat to meet Trump post-election, joined a conversation that touched on U.S. Steel, Israel, border security, and Greenland. Trump also praised Fetterman’s wife, Gisele, calling the couple “impressive.”
Fetterman explained his decision to meet, stating he represents all Pennsylvanians, not just Democrats. He also expressed openness to supporting Trump’s Cabinet picks, including Secretary of State nominee Sen. Marco Rubio (R-Fla.).
Additionally, Fetterman co-sponsored the Laken Riley Act, an immigration bill aiming to reduce migrant-related crime, which passed its first Senate hurdle with bipartisan support in an 84-9 vote.
