President Donald Trump praised Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos on Tuesday after Amazon denied reports it planned to show how much tariffs add to product prices. Trump said he spoke with Bezos, calling him “terrific” and saying he “did the right thing.”
Earlier, the White House called the reported plan “hostile and political.” Press secretary Karoline Leavitt questioned why Amazon didn’t propose such a display during the Biden administration’s inflation peak and used the issue to promote domestic manufacturing.
Amazon later clarified the tariff display was never considered for its main site. “The team that runs our ultra low cost Amazon Haul store considered the idea of listing import charges on certain products. This was never approved and is not going to happen,” Amazon spokesperson Tim Doyle said.
Amazon Haul offers budget-priced items in various categories.
Trump has imposed a 145% tariff on Chinese imports and 10% across all trading partners, with steeper “reciprocal” tariffs delayed 90 days for negotiation.
When asked if Bezos remains a Trump supporter, Leavitt declined to comment on personal relationships.
