Former President Donald Trump, while currently criticizing Minnesota Gov. Tim Walz’s response to the 2020 Minneapolis protests, had praised him at the time. In a June 1, 2020, call obtained by the Associated Press, Trump told Walz, “What they did in Minneapolis was incredible. They went in and dominated, and it happened immediately.”
The call, which included Defense Secretary Mark Esper, Army Gen. Mark Milley, and Attorney General William Barr, has resurfaced as Walz is now Vice President Kamala Harris’ running mate. Despite Trump’s recent claims that he was responsible for deploying the National Guard, it was actually Walz who ordered the mobilization in response to requests from local mayors.
In the 2020 call, Trump described Walz as “an excellent guy” and praised the National Guard’s swift action. However, Trump campaign spokesperson Karoline Leavitt recently claimed Walz allowed Minneapolis to burn for days before acting.
