At a campaign rally in Tucson, Arizona, on Thursday, former President Donald Trump promised to eliminate taxes on overtime pay if he wins a second term. He claimed this policy would incentivize workers and make it easier for companies to hire. Under his plan, overtime hours—those worked beyond 40 hours a week—would be tax-free. The Trump campaign has not yet provided further details on how this plan would be implemented.
The Harris campaign quickly dismissed the proposal, with spokesperson Joseph Costello calling it a “snake oil sales pitch” and criticizing Trump’s record on worker wages. They pointed to a 2019 Trump administration rule that replaced a more expansive overtime pay policy proposed during the Obama administration.
Trump’s pledge follows his recent call to end taxes on tips, and his Arizona rally marked his first public appearance since debating Vice President Kamala Harris. Meanwhile, the Biden administration continues to push for pro-worker policies, including a rule that raises the minimum salary threshold for overtime pay and expanding the Child Tax Credit.
