Campaigning in North Carolina, former President Donald Trump promised to push for legislation banning sanctuary cities if re-elected. Speaking at a rally in Wilmington, Trump said he would direct federal law enforcement to target cities that fail to cooperate with immigration authorities. “We will hunt down, capture every single gang member, drug dealer, rapist, murderer, and migrant criminal that is being illegally harbored,” Trump said.

Sanctuary cities, which decline full cooperation with federal immigration authorities, have long been a contentious issue among Republicans. Trump pledged to use the “full weight of the federal government” to pressure jurisdictions that resist cooperating with Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).

Immigration has become a major issue in the 2024 election, with Trump and his running mate, JD Vance, making false claims about Haitian migrants in Ohio, including baseless allegations of migrants eating pets. Ohio Governor Mike DeWine, a fellow Republican, criticized these remarks as “hurtful” to the Haitian community.
