With a self-imposed deadline to finalize global trade deals fast approaching, President Trump said Sunday he may skip negotiations altogether and instead assign tariff rates to countries via formal letters. The pause on Trump’s expansive tariff agenda ends in about 10 days.

“We’ll send a letter… saying ‘congratulations, you’re going to pay a 25%, or 40%, or 50% tariff,’” Trump told Fox News. “We don’t have to meet. We understand, we have all the numbers.”

Trump had previously promised to deliver such letters in May and June, but none have been issued. The administration initially set a goal of completing 90 trade deals in 90 days after announcing the tariff pause in April.

Commerce Secretary Howard Lutnick and NEC Director Kevin Hassett have said deals may materialize this week, while Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent recently suggested Labor Day as a more realistic deadline.

Markets have so far ignored the drama, but Trump’s plan to act unilaterally could renew volatility if tariffs materialize without formal agreements.
