President Donald Trump is reportedly preparing an executive order to dissolve the United States Postal Service (USPS) board and place the agency under the Commerce Department’s control. The move, first reported by The Washington Post, has prompted an emergency meeting of the USPS board to discuss how it might fight the order.
The American Postal Workers Union (APWU) strongly opposes the proposal, with APWU President Mark Dimondstein calling it an “outrageous, unlawful attack on a storied national treasure.” He warned that such a move could increase postage costs and reduce service, particularly in rural areas.
This development follows Postmaster General Louis DeJoy’s announcement that he will step down after five years. Trump has previously floated the idea of privatizing USPS, stating in December that “a lot of people have liked [the idea] for a long time.”
Since Congress has explicit authority over USPS operations, any executive action to restructure the agency is expected to face significant legal challenges.
