Former President Donald Trump signed pardons for 23 anti-abortion activists on Thursday, including individuals convicted under the Freedom of Access to Clinic Entrances Act. These activists were found guilty of illegally blockading a reproductive health clinic in Washington, D.C.
Trump, calling the prosecutions “ridiculous,” highlighted that many of the activists were elderly. Among those pardoned was Lauren Handy, 31, sentenced to nearly five years for leading a blockade where a nurse was injured. Police also found fetuses in Handy’s home during their investigation.
The pardons came a day before Trump was set to speak via video at the March for Life rally in Washington, D.C., with Vice President JD Vance addressing the event in person. Trump has taken credit for overturning Roe v. Wade in 2022 but stated during his 2024 campaign that abortion laws should be decided by individual states, stopping short of endorsing a national ban.
