President Donald Trump on Tuesday signed a memorandum directing the declassification of all FBI documents related to the Crossfire Hurricane investigation, which examined his 2016 campaign’s potential ties to Russia.
“This was total weaponization. It’s a disgrace… but now you’ll be able to see for yourselves,” Trump said at the signing ceremony. White House staff secretary Will Scharf added that it was “long past time” for the public to fully understand what was in the files.
The Crossfire Hurricane investigation was launched in July 2016 over concerns that members of Trump’s campaign may have coordinated with Russian officials. It ultimately led to the appointment of Special Counsel Robert Mueller.
Mueller’s final report did not establish that Trump or his campaign conspired with Russia to interfere in the 2016 election. However, the special counsel declined to make a determination on whether Trump obstructed justice.
Trump and his allies have long argued that the investigation was politically motivated. The newly signed memorandum could make long-classified details of the probe public.
