During Tuesday night’s debate, former President Donald Trump expressed interest in repealing ObamaCare again but admitted he does not currently have a replacement plan. Trump, who has consistently criticized the Affordable Care Act since his first presidential campaign, promised to “replace it” but only offered vague “concepts” without detailing a concrete plan.

In 2017, Republicans were close to repealing the law, but three GOP Senators—John McCain, Susan Collins, and Lisa Murkowski—joined Democrats to block the effort. Subsequent attempts by Trump’s administration to repeal parts of the law were also unsuccessful.

Despite Trump’s ongoing criticism of ObamaCare as costly and ineffective, most Republicans in Congress are not pursuing a repeal strategy, even if they regain control of the White House and Senate. Biden officials highlighted that nearly 50 million Americans have enrolled in ObamaCare since 2014.
