President Donald Trump announced Friday that South African farmers seeking to flee the country will be granted a rapid pathway to U.S. citizenship, calling their treatment “terrible” and alleging land confiscation.
“They are confiscating their LAND and FARMS, and MUCH WORSE THAN THAT,” Trump wrote on Truth Social.
The move follows Trump’s February executive order, which halted federal aid to South Africa over what he called “unjust racial discrimination” against white Afrikaner farmers. That order also directed State and Homeland Security officials to prioritize their resettlement under the U.S. Refugee Admissions Program.
The South African government denies racial discrimination, arguing its new land law aims to redress past injustices from apartheid and colonialism. The law, which went into effect in January, is currently being challenged in court, and no land has been seized.
Elon Musk, a South African-born Trump adviser, has criticized the law, claiming racial bias prevented his Starlink service from operating in the country. Meanwhile, South African President Cyril Ramaphosa has vowed the country “will not be bullied.”
