President-elect Donald Trump announced plans to nominate Kash Patel as head of the FBI, replacing Christopher Wray. Patel, a former DOJ prosecutor and staunch Trump ally, is known for calling for mass firings and the removal of security clearances for those involved in investigations of Trump.
Patel gained prominence as an aide to Rep. Devin Nunes, where he sought to discredit investigations into Trump’s ties to Russia. He later served in senior roles during Trump’s first term, including at the Pentagon, where his actions drew scrutiny from the Jan. 6 committee. Patel denied any wrongdoing related to the Capitol attack.
Critics, including former FBI Deputy Director Andrew McCabe, argue that Patel’s leadership could compromise the FBI’s mission. “No part of the FBI’s mission is safe with Kash Patel in any position of leadership,” McCabe said.
Patel has echoed Trump’s claims of a “deep state” and criticized the FBI’s investigations into the former president. His nomination is expected to face challenges in Senate confirmation due to his controversial background and close ties to Trump.
