The Trump administration is finalizing plans to dismantle the Department of Education, with an executive order expected this month, according to sources familiar with the matter.

The order would direct the department to create a plan for winding down its functions and outline legal steps to transfer its powers to other agencies. However, full closure would require congressional approval, which currently lacks sufficient support.

Elon Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) is also reviewing the agency, seeking access to records. The Wall Street Journal first reported on the administration’s discussions.

The timing of the order is complicated by the pending confirmation of Trump’s Education Secretary nominee, Linda McMahon. Some officials worry the order could put her in a tough position before she is confirmed. A source noted, “Common sense tells me they won’t do that until the secretary is confirmed.”
