As negotiations over government funding broke down Monday, Democrats accused President Donald Trump of fueling division with a racist deepfake video instead of working toward a deal.

Sen. Alex Padilla (D-Calif.) said, “Democrats came to the White House to keep the government open. The president answered with a racist AI video.” The video, shared on Truth Social, depicted House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-N.Y.) in a sombrero and Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer making false remarks about Democrats giving free healthcare to undocumented immigrants. In reality, only lawfully present immigrants are eligible for Affordable Care Act subsidies and Medicaid coverage.

Rep. Madeleine Dean (D-Pa.) confronted Speaker Mike Johnson (R-La.) about the video, calling it “disgraceful, bigoted, racist.” Johnson replied that the post “wasn’t my style” and later told CNN it was “a joke” and “not the real issue.”

Democrats continue to demand permanent ACA subsidies and reversal of Medicaid cuts in budget talks, warning millions could lose healthcare or face soaring premiums. Republicans insist Democrats want benefits for undocumented immigrants, a claim contradicted by federal law.

With the shutdown deadline imminent, both sides remain entrenched, and Republicans lack the votes to advance their spending plan without Democratic support.
