Former President Trump mocked Vice President Kamala Harris’ heritage during a live interview at the National Association of Black Journalists convention in Chicago, claiming she “happened to turn Black.”
ABC News correspondent Rachel Scott questioned Trump about remarks from other Republicans suggesting Harris was a “DEI hire,” selected for the Democratic ticket due to her race and gender. Trump responded, “She was always of Indian heritage… I didn’t know she was Black until a number of years ago when she happened to turn black.”
Scott clarified that Harris has always identified as a Black woman. Trump criticized Scott’s tone, stating, “She was Indian all the way then all of a sudden she made a turn. And she became a Black person.”
Harris is both Indian American and African American, with her mother emigrating from India and her father from Jamaica. Her campaign did not immediately comment on Trump’s remarks.
Trump’s appearance at the NABJ conference, moderated by Rachel Scott, Kadia Goba of Semafor, and Fox News’ Harris Faulkner, faced backlash from some Black journalists. They questioned why the organization invited Trump, given his history of attacks on the press and journalists of color. Organizers defended their decision, citing the importance of interviewing a leading presidential candidate.
