U.S. President-elect Donald Trump met NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte on Friday in Palm Beach, Florida, to discuss global security issues, according to a NATO statement that offered no further details.
This marked Rutte’s first meeting with Trump since his November 5 election. Rutte previously emphasized Trump’s role in maintaining NATO’s strength, congratulating him on his win.
Trump has criticized NATO for insufficient defense spending by member nations, portraying allies as overly reliant on U.S. military support and threatening to withhold defense for those failing to meet spending goals.
Rutte also met Trump’s national security adviser nominee, Rep. Michael Waltz, and other members of the incoming administration, per the NATO statement. Rutte assumed leadership of NATO in October.
