President-elect Donald Trump met with French President Emmanuel Macron and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky in Paris to discuss the war in Ukraine and explore pathways to end it. This marked Trump’s first meeting with Zelensky since his election victory. The discussion occurred as Trump prepares to assume office in six weeks and launch diplomatic efforts addressing the conflict.
Trump recently announced retired General Keith Kellogg as his envoy for Ukraine-Russia diplomacy, following a Washington visit by Zelensky’s chief of staff, Andriy Yermak. Yermak also met Vice President-elect JD Vance and Trump’s national security adviser, Mike Waltz.
Macron reportedly persuaded Trump to hold the trilateral meeting during Trump’s visit to Paris for Notre-Dame Cathedral’s reopening. Initially hesitant, Trump agreed, and the 45-minute meeting was described as “good and fruitful” by sources.
Zelensky called the talks “productive,” emphasizing collaboration toward “a just peace.” He expressed optimism, stating, “Peace through strength is possible,” on X (formerly Twitter).
